أحمد [AHMED] – FOUR-DAY RESIDENCYPAT THOMAS / ANTONIN GERBAL / JOEL GRIP / SEYMOUR WRIGht PIANO -                   DRUMS            DOUBLE BASS -         SAX

Delighted to welcome back أحمد [Ahmed] for a four-night residency to coincide with new album, Wood Blues on the Astral Spirits label. Their 2022 residency here was a real highlight for us and this should be four nights to raise the roof and lift the spirits.

an excerpt from Edward George's 10,000+word liner-note 8 page booklet that comes with the double LP:

DELAY, 1961 (THE STORY SO FAR)

They are, Seymour said, in movement, and in keeping with their claim, their music is, like a Brownian bridge, an A&J Tranean train, a Byrdian plane, or a Blountian space-time myth-machine, a way of playing themselves into the historio-graphical hands, or better yet, the loving arms, or perhaps, to be precise, the metaphysical embrace, of ‘a new creative space’, and playing is a way, the only way, when you think about it, of getting and staying in movement, the only way of staying ahead of themselves. Staying ahead of themselves was always important, and tricky too: they were on the (musical) trail of someone who preceded them, was ahead of himself, or at least ahead of his own epoch, the late 1950s, and theirs, the late 20th and early 21st century, in which he was, before they found him (or he found them, the way music finds you — and finds you out) present as no more than a discographical evanescence

SVEN-ÅKE JOHANSSON. Cafe Oto. London (UK)

SVEN-ÅKE JOHANSSON – TWO-DAY RESIDENCYW/ JOEL GRIP, PIERRE BOREL AND SEYMOUR WRIGHT

Sven-Åke Johansson, born in 1943 in Mariestad (Sweden), is one of the style-defining drummers of the German free jazz era of the 60s and 70s. From the 80s onwards, he pursued an artistic path largely independent of institutions and groups as a music performer in the circles of fine arts and new music. Among other things, more than fifty record releases, a number of music theater pieces, radio plays, pictorial works and a lively touring life are among his oeuvre.

"It’s hard to know where to begin with percussionist and polymath Sven-Åke Johansson: Is he a bebopdrummer? A visual artist? A Fluxus-style madman? Actually he’s all of the above and more, and over the decades he’s never confined himself to any single approach or discipline. Like many early exponents of European free jazz–he appears on key recordings by Peter Brötzmann, Manfred Schoof, and the Globe Unity Orchestra, among others–Johansson is rooted in bebop, and he’s continued to carry the torch in bands with adventurous musicians half his age." – Peter Margasak

VOUS- KLUBOJADALNIA MLODSZA SIOSTRA. WARSAW (POLAND)

 VOUS

Olga Kozieł : śpiew
Maria Stępień : skrzypce
Sebastien Beliah : kontrabas
Hannes Lingens : perkusja
Punktem wyjścia improwizacji są tradycyjne pieśni ludowe. Instrumenty i głos stają się jednością, a muzycy szukają wspólnego terytorium. Dialog w duecie Beliah/Kozieł trwa od 10 lat, teraz Maria Stępień i Hannes Lingens zostali zaproszeni do tworzenia wspólnej opowieści.

Olga Kozieł : voice,

Maria Stępień : violin,

Sébastien Beliah : double bass,

Hannes Lingens : percussions

Using the traditional songs of Poland as a starting point for improvisation. Finding a common territory that crosses the ages and pays no heed to maps and borders. Seeking to return to the primary song, the one that would have inspired all the songs. Going where instruments and voice become one.

Taking as their starting point the musical dialogue begun over ten years ago between Olga Kozieł and Sébastien Beliah, the duo is now opening the door to invite Maria Stępień and Hannes Lingens.
